Naming Him
Psalm 91:2 - "I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust."
Notice the psalmist does not wait for someone else to describe God to him. He says, I will say. Naming who God is to you, out loud, in your own words, is an act of faith that shapes how you face the day. It is one thing to know theologically that God is a refuge. It is another to declare, in your own voice, over your own life, that he is your refuge.
There is something in our tradition about naming, about how a name carries destiny and identity, spoken with intention over a life. Here the psalmist is naming God with the same weight, my refuge, my fortress, my God. Not a distant deity read about in a book, but the God he has decided to trust with his own mouth and his own life.
Proverbs 18:10 says that the name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run into it and are safe. When you call God your refuge, you are declaring that your confidence rests in His character rather than in changing circumstances.
Whatever pressed on you yesterday does not get the final word on who God is to you today. Say it again, in your own words. Let your mouth agree with what your spirit already knows to be true.
Consider the situation weighing most heavily on your heart. What truth about God's character do you need to say aloud over it today?
Prayer
Lord, you are my refuge and my fortress. I will not borrow someone else's testimony when I have my own voice to declare who you are to me. Teach me to trust you with my own words today, not just my private thoughts. Amen.
