Because He Has Set His Love

Psalm 91:14 - "Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name."

Here the voice of the psalm changes. For thirteen verses, the psalmist has spoken about God. Now God himself speaks. His words reveal the heart of the psalm: this is not mechanical protection earned by flawless performance. It is the language of covenant relationship, of love set upon God and a life learning to know his name.

Knowing God's name in scripture is never just knowing a word, it means knowing his character, his ways, his faithfulness, well enough to call on him by what you know to be true of him rather than by rumour. That kind of knowing grows the way any relationship grows, through time spent, not information collected.

John 17:3 describes eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. To know God's name is more than knowing a title. It is to grow in relationship with Him and learn His faithful character.

If you have wondered whether you have done enough to deserve God's care, let this verse turn your eyes away from anxious performance and back to relationship. Set your love upon him. Learn his character. Rest in his grace.

Examine the way you approach God. Are you resting in relationship with Him, or anxiously trying to earn the care He gives by grace?

Prayer

Lord, let my love for you be evident, not performed. Let me know your name, your character and your ways, deeply enough to call on you with confidence. Set me on high, not because I have earned it, but because I know you. Amen.
